What is laser resurfacing?
Also known as Fractional Laser Skin rejuvenation, this treatment is the best option for people looking to remove acne scars, reduce wrinkles and generally improve their skin.
It involves using a particular type of laser technology that uses heat to create microscopic channels that penetrate into the dermal layer of the skin.
Due to the laser’s precise nature, it can target specific problem areas of the skin, such as scars and sun damage, but it is commonly used as a treatment to bring a more youthful appearance to the entire face.
How does laser resurfacing work?
Once the microscopic “damage” has been created in the deeper layers of your skin, your cells respond by stimulating the production of new tissue and collagen. Throughout the procedure, the dead cells on the surface of your skin (epidermis) are also removed.
Although this treatment is non-invasive, there is downtime to be considered, as your face will be visibly red for a few days.
The result of this rejuvenation process is brighter skin, better texture, reduced wrinkles and scarring and an overall more youthful appearance.
What is the downtime for laser skin resurfacing?
Immediately after treatment, you can expect your skin to be red, warm and perhaps a little bloody (although not typically painful), depending on the strength of treatment used and the type of skin issue being addressed.
After 3-5 days, redness should be mostly, if not completely, subsided; however, some mild speckling may remain visible on the skin for up to 10 days.
Aftercare for laser skin resurfacing
It’s very important not to touch or wash your face for 24-48 hours post-treatment. Your skin will be in a stage of healing and should be left alone. Vigorous exercise should also be avoided during this initial period so that your body can focus on recovery.
After 48 hours, you can gently rinse your face with water only (we recommend boiling a kettle and letting it cool so that the water is sterile, if possible), but stay away from skincare products and make-up for now.
After around seven days, you can typically start resuming your everyday routine. However, because each individual treatment is so different, your practitioner will advise you on your specific aftercare instructions post-treatment.
How long does it take to see results?
The healing cycle of your skin is four weeks long, meaning you need to wait at least this long to see the full results of your treatment. Depending on your skin’s capability to heal and the issue being addressed, it may take more than one treatment to see a more drastic improvement in your skin.

Does laser skin resurfacing hurt?
Laser skin resurfacing can be done at different strengths, depending on the level of rejuvenation needed. You can expect some discomfort during the procedure. This may feel like tiny needle pricks accompanied by some warmth from the laser.
The good news is that this is a quick treatment, so any discomfort will be limited to just a few minutes, and the results are well worth it.
